Bangkok: The 2nd Army Area Commander has clarified the situation regarding the Thai-Cambodian border tensions, emphasizing efforts to foster unity among the people of the nation. The commander, Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, addressed recent developments concerning the deployment of Cambodian military forces along the border, specifically in the Phu Makhuea area of Si Sa Ket Province, which falls under Thai sovereignty.
According to Thai News Agency, Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang pointed out that the appearance of the Royal Guard Headquarters (BHQ), a unit under Cambodian Senate President Samdech Hun Sen, in the contested area might suggest an attempt by Cambodia to reassert control. He noted that this is a common practice and reassured that both countries are monitoring each other’s military movements. The general confirmed adherence to the agreements made in the recent General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, suggesting that Cambodia’s activities might include routine troop visits or personnel reinforcement.
When questioned about the potential for conflict, Lt. Gen. Boonsin reassured that Phu Makhuea remains under Thailand’s jurisdiction. He acknowledged the deployment of new BHQ forces, which might indicate strategic adjustments by Cambodia. These forces, he explained, are likely well-trained and directly managed by Cambodian leaders, reflecting a normal military rotation.
In response to questions about the Cambodian military’s operational priorities, including activities like mine laying, Lt. Gen. Boonsin confirmed that it is expected for Cambodia to utilize its best resources. He emphasized that such actions are within Cambodia’s own domain.
The general also addressed rumors regarding the death of Lt. Gen. Sray Duk, a Cambodian military commander, stating that verification should be sought from Cambodian authorities. He advised following updates from the Thai Ministry of Defense or high-ranking Cambodian officials for the most accurate information.
Regarding criticisms of his absence from the frontline, Lt. Gen. Boonsin explained that his current engagements in Bangkok involve interacting with students and the public to promote national unity. He assured that capable commanders are present in the border area, and he remains committed to returning promptly if the situation escalates. He also clarified that he has no intentions of entering politics, contrary to public speculation.
