Bangkok: Pheu Thai MPs have raised concerns regarding Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s lack of transparency over the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the United States concerning rare earth minerals.
According to Thai News Agency, Chanin Rungthanakiat, former secretary to the Minister of the Interior and deputy spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, has questioned the motives behind not informing the House of Representatives or the public prior to the signing.
Chanin highlighted the importance of the issue, emphasizing that Anutin was aware of the MOU before his meeting with US President Donald Trump. He questioned the absence of prior notice to Parliament and the public, and expressed concerns about whether the agreement was signed with adequate caution and prudence. Chanin also referenced statements by former Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, who indicated no previous negotiations with the United States on this matter. He demanded clarity on when the discussions were initiated by Anutin and whether they were conducted with due diligence.
Chanin stressed the need for transparency and public debate on significant matters like the rare earth minerals MOU. He questioned why there was no communication with Congress or the public, despite knowing the meeting with President Trump would involve signing an agreement. He urged the government to address two key questions: the timeline and carefulness of negotiations by Anutin’s administration, and the lack of communication with the public on such a critical issue.
