Bangkok: Pheu Thai Party welcomes Thailand’s agreement with the US to reduce tariffs by 19%, stating that Thailand remains competitive on the global stage and sees benefits from lower electricity and cooking gas prices. The government is ready to disclose information to the public and participate in inspections.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Khattiya Sawatdipol, a party-list MP and deputy spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party, addressed the US’s 19% reciprocal tariff on Thailand. She stated that the Pheu Thai Party commends the hard work of the Thailand team, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, for successfully closing the preliminary tariff agreement with the US at 19%. This rate is competitive on the global stage and is mutually acceptable to both parties. This success is not just about the tariff figures, but also reflects the strengthened economic alliance between Thailand and the US, as well as the Thai government’s ability to safeguard national interests and strike a balance between market opening and protecting the domestic economy. She commends the negotiating team led by Mr. Pichai and the support team behind the negotiations, who conducted the negotiations meticulously and thoroughly, based on the shared principle that no national benefit will be exchanged for
an unfair agreement.
Ms. Khattiya also stated that all of Thailand’s proposals, such as opening up imports of products that cannot be commercially produced domestically, such as cherries or natural gas, and restructuring energy imports from the United States, have been calculated based on strategic cooperation and aligned with measures to protect Thailand’s agriculture and industry. Thailand will benefit from these tariffs in the future, including potentially lower electricity and cooking gas prices, growth in the parts manufacturing industry, lower import prices due to revised regulations, and opportunities for future production restructuring. She reaffirmed the government’s principle that all negotiation processes must be transparent, disclose information, and be publicly reported at every stage, enabling the public to participate in and participate in scrutiny. This is a crucial foundation for the democratic system that the Pheu Thai Party has always upheld.
