Phumtham Questions Push for Anutin as Interim Prime Minister

Bangkok: “Phumtham” has raised concerns regarding the proposal to appoint Anutin Charnvirakul as the interim Prime Minister, questioning the decision by the Prachachon Party. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, addressed the issue in his role as acting Prime Minister. He highlighted the historical stance of the Bhumjaithai Party, led by Anutin, which has opposed constitutional amendments proposed by the Pheu Thai Party.

According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham emphasized that while it is within the opposition’s rights to propose Anutin as the interim leader, it is essential for the Prachachon Party to consider the implications of their decision. He questioned the confidence of the Prachachon Party in working with Bhumjaithai to amend the constitution, given past obstructions. Phumtham pointed out that during prior attempts by the Pheu Thai Party to amend the constitution, Bhumjaithai was not supportive, casting doubt on their commitment to achieving constitutional changes within a six-month timeframe.

Phumtham urged the Prachachon Party to carefully evaluate their strategy, considering Bhumjaithai’s historical opposition to constitutional amendments when in government. He left the decision to the Prachachon Party, suggesting they reflect on whether they are certain about their choice to support Anutin for the interim Prime Minister position.
