Bangkok: Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has voiced concerns about the deterioration of the bureaucratic system amid a wave of support for extending the term of the Second Army Region commander. Phumtham highlighted the presence of several deputy commanders and others waiting in line, noting that the army would propose such an extension if deemed appropriate.
According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham made these remarks after presiding over the opening ceremony of the “Thai Arts and Crafts, OTOP, Forging Hearts with Royal Grace” event at Muang Thong Thani. He addressed calls for an extension of service for Second Army Region Commander Lieutenant General Boonsin Phadklang, emphasizing the importance of multiple armies and individuals in the defense of sovereignty. Phumtham stressed that any extension would need a review of existing regulations due to the presence of deputy commanders and others within the hierarchy.
Phumtham further explained, “We have never extended his term of office in the past, but extending his term while he is still in service is possible. We’ll let the army consider it. If it sees a need, we’ll make a proposal. We’re confident that the Second Army Region commander is capable, so we’ll let the army decide.”
When questioned about the possibility of extending military service under current regulations, Phumtham said, “It’s unlikely. Let’s leave it up to the military.” He reassured that while extensions require further review, the value of service is well-acknowledged. He believes the military would raise the issue if a feasible approach exists.
Regarding the retirement of several military commanders this year, Phumtham stated that the matter has been known since early in the year and follows standard military procedures. He expressed that any distortion of these procedures could lead to further issues. Emphasizing the need for the system to run its course, Phumtham remarked on the importance of maintaining orderly administration to avoid potential problems in government systems.
