Phumtham Seeks Cambodia’s Sincerity After Discussion with Trump

Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Thailand, reiterated his position on the ongoing conflict with Cambodia, emphasizing the need for Cambodia’s sincerity following discussions with US President Donald Trump. He disclosed that Maris Sengiampong, Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, is set to engage in talks with a Cambodian minister, focusing on conditions for troop withdrawal and relocation of military equipment to prevent distortion and threats to the people and national interests. Phumtham asserted that Thai soldiers would continue their duties diligently until negotiations are concluded, viewing US tax measures as a positive development.

According to Thai News Agency, the acting Prime Minister revealed that President Trump proposed a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, underscoring tax measures as a motivating factor. Trump invited various Thai officials, including Maris Sengiampong, Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, and Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, to discuss the situation. Phumtham emphasized that discussions have not been limited to the US, noting that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as the ASEAN Chair, also expressed concerns about civilian safety and the loss of life.

Phumtham stressed Thailand’s commitment to peace and negotiations, acknowledging Trump’s desire for a ceasefire. He highlighted that past conflicts involved civilian areas without military targets being attacked, leading to Thai retaliation against military bases responsible for civilian harm. Reports indicate that approximately 15 Thai civilians have been killed, over 50 injured, and more than 130,000 evacuated as a result of the conflict.

President Trump reportedly expressed his aversion to the ongoing violence, stating that continued shooting could hinder trade negotiations. Phumtham assured Trump of Thailand’s commitment to the principle of prioritizing civilian welfare while negotiating with Cambodia. However, he emphasized that Thailand’s current conditions do not necessitate third-party intervention, though he appreciated international concern.

Phumtham mentioned the possibility of discussions with Cambodia taking place around noon if arrangements were finalized. He plans to visit Trat Province with the Foreign Affairs Minister, the location for a new operation. Phumtham urged the public to remain calm, acknowledging the challenges faced by those near the border and condemning Cambodia’s actions as international crimes against civilians.

He also cautioned against the dissemination of sensitive military information on social media, emphasizing the importance of protecting the safety of soldiers and national interests. In provinces like Chanthaburi and Trat, which have declared states of emergency, he assured that all efforts are being made in coordination with relevant agencies to protect citizens and soldiers.

Phumtham expressed hope for a peaceful resolution, stating that the Thai military would continue fulfilling its duties until a clear and beneficial agreement for the people and country was reached. He reiterated the need for Cambodia to demonstrate sincerity by ceasing fire and withdrawing troops, as Thailand has long advocated for peace and protection under international law.

Regarding US tax measures set to be announced on August 1st, Phumtham indicated no issues, highlighting that a ceasefire would be beneficial globally and help protect civilians. He emphasized Thailand’s peaceful stance and readiness to negotiate, seeking outcomes that benefit the country.

Phumtham acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the completion of talks by August 1, stating that it depended on Cambodia’s willingness for a ceasefire. He expressed Thailand’s readiness to negotiate under agreed conditions, emphasizing the need for detailed discussions on troop movements.

Finally, Phumtham viewed the trend of US tax measures as positive, thanking Malaysia, China, and the US for their concern for civilian lives. He appreciated international understanding and support, expressing gratitude to the US for its role in seeking a beneficial resolution for all parties involved.
