Phumtham Urges Thai-Cambodian Army Commanders to Resolve Border Clash

Bangkok: “Phumtham” throws the Thai and Cambodian army commanders to clear up the clash at ‘Chong Bok’ on 31 May after closing the room to talk with the army commanders to look at evidence from ‘aerial maps’. Soldiers from both sides are still at the line – sitting and talking. Emphasizes that they have not discussed the border yet. Let’s wait for all sides’ emotions to calm down first. Asks not to look at ‘Cambodia’ as winking at each other, fearing more shooting. Insists that Thailand is not afraid – not weak, but war is not good for anyone.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, addressed the recent conflict between Thai and Cambodian soldiers in the Chong Bok area, Ubon Ratchathani Province. He stated that efforts are being made to de-escalate the situation. Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, has instructed all parties to remain patient and engage in negotiations at all levels. A meeting is scheduled between Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk and Gen. Mao Soephan, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, on May 31. Mr. Phumtham confirmed discussions with Gen. Tea Sayha, Cambodia’s Minister of Defense, and Gen. Nattapol Nakphanit, Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Defense. The Cambodian side is reportedly interested in resolving the issue.

Mr. Phumtham emphasized that violence is not beneficial to either country. He relayed Gen. Tea Sayha’s commitment to avoiding conflict and noted that both Gen. Hun Manet and Gen. Mao Soephan have agreed that provocations must cease. The focus is currently on preventing further clashes and allowing emotions to settle before addressing territorial claims.

The Thai-Cambodian border has experienced previous tensions, partly due to violations of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning canal digging in the Chong Bok area. While Mr. Phumtham acknowledged that there are no significant issues at the policy level, he stressed the importance of clarifying territorial claims and implementing the MOU effectively.

Regarding concerns about the Cambodian side’s sincerity, Mr. Phumtham asserted that both parties are acting in good faith. He cautioned against assuming ulterior motives, as such assumptions could lead to unnecessary violence. He described the recent shooting incident as an accidental clash involving small arms and urged against drawing exaggerated conclusions.

Mr. Phumtham reiterated that both nations are committed to maintaining peace and preventing violence. He highlighted the importance of resolving misunderstandings at the operational level and advocated for continued dialogue to reach a mutual understanding. He dismissed speculation about Thailand’s internal weakness and emphasized that problems are normal but must be addressed through cooperation.

In response to reports of casualties from the May 28 clash, Mr. Phumtham characterized the incident as minor and emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation. He urged the public to remain calm and assured that discussions are underway to prevent further confrontations.

The meeting between Mr. Phumtham and General Phana Klaewplodthuk at Government House reportedly took considerable time, underscoring the importance of resolving the conflict peacefully.
