Bangkok: Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, confirmed that the Royal Thai Navy will receive only one frigate in the 69 budget year as the government prioritizes economic stimulation over military upgrades.
According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham explained that budgetary limitations prevent the acquisition of additional ships as funds are allocated for submarine payments.
Phumtham discussed the ongoing negotiations with the Navy Commander regarding submarines, stating that the issue requires resolution in two parts: a Cabinet decision and a contract amendment. He anticipates these discussions will conclude by June. While the navy originally proposed purchasing frigates in pairs, budget constraints necessitated the acquisition of a single ship. Phumtham emphasized the need for fiscal prudence given the government’s economic priorities.
The Defense Minister acknowledged the necessity of two frigates but reiterated the current feasibility of acquiring only one. He expressed understanding for the navy’s situation, noting similar challenges faced by other military branches, including outdated helicopters and equipment. Phumtham highlighted the importance of repairing existing military assets as a cost-effective interim solution while emphasizing the need for collaboration with domestic defense industries.
Phumtham addressed the police helicopter situation, noting the fleet’s age and the need for upgrades. He indicated plans to allocate future budgets for equipment repair and replacement, advocating for standardized repair processes involving manufacturers and domestic industries. The goal is to modernize military and police equipment efficiently while adhering to budgetary constraints.
