Pita Advocates Peaceful Solutions Amid Economic Tensions Between Thailand and Cambodia

Bangkok: Pita Limjaroenrat, the former leader of Thailand’s Move Forward Party, has called for de-escalation of tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, urging for peaceful negotiations instead of conflict. Pita expressed his concerns on LinkedIn, emphasizing the potential economic repercussions for both nations should tensions escalate.

According to Thai News Agency, Pita highlighted the economic stakes involved, pointing out that Cambodia exports $12.7 billion to the US, which constitutes 27% of its GDP, while Thailand exports $55.1 billion, accounting for about 10% of its GDP. He noted that Cambodia stands at a greater risk than Thailand in the context of tariff negotiations with the US. Pita warned that while governments might consider going to war, it is the private sector and the workers who would ultimately bear the brunt of such decisions.

Pita questioned the wisdom of risking a significant portion of the economy during a period of economic fragility, stressing that losing a substantial part of the economy without just cause is a risk not worth taking. He underscored the importance of choosing peace proactively rather than being forced into it, advocating for dialogue and reduced tensions as the way forward.
