PKS maintains constructive opposition: Jazuli Juwaini

Chairperson of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Faction at the House of Representatives (DPR RI) Jazuli Juwaini said his party keeps providing constructive opposition to the Joko Widodo (Jokowi) -Ma’ruf Amin administration to maintain the system of checks and balances in Indonesia’s democracy.

“We, as the opposition, remain committed to maintaining the system of checks and balances within the government to ensure that every decision of the government will always take into account the people’s interests,” he stated in Jakarta on Thursday.

PKS also remains committed to respecting political parties supporting Jokowi’s presidency since his presidential campaign, he said.

Taking on the role of offering constructive opposition, he stated the PKS will provide constructive criticism to the government by evaluating its performances with an objective parameter.

The government should prioritize the people’s livelihood and economics — as mandated by Article 33 and 34 of the Constitution on the economy — when taking into account economic policies, Juwaini noted. “As the opposition, the PKS affirmed its goal to maintain national sovereignty regarding multiple aspects to help the country escape from the middle-income trap and realize an advanced economy. We urged the government to collaborate with national stakeholders to achieve the common goal,” he emphasized.

The party encouraged dignified politics and a healthy democracy. Hence, any dissent should be embraced by discussions and deliberations instead of being suppressed, as the country should be heedful of the views and inputs of several sides in order to address common challenges, Juwaini remarked.

Juwaini, who served as a member of Commission I of the DPR RI, also encouraged stakeholders to uphold the values of the Pancasila and the Constitution and refrain from promoting the core tenets as a mere political slogan.

“We need to enhance collaboration among national stakeholders to improve our unity and synergy as well as to reconfirm our national consensus that is the state ideology of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution,” he stated.
