PM Encourages Thai Representatives at Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission Meeting

Phnom Penh: The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the JBC negotiation team and emphasized the importance of national interests during the ongoing Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission meeting.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, the Government Spokesperson, disclosed that Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra has been closely following the developments of the 6th Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meeting. This meeting, hosted by Cambodia in Phnom Penh, marks the beginning of discussions led by Mr. Prasarn Prasarnvinitchai, the former Thai Ambassador to Phnom Penh and current Chairman of the JBC, alongside Mr. Lam Chea, Minister Responsible for Border Affairs and Head of the Secretariat of National Border Affairs of Cambodia, who is serving as the Cambodian Co-Chair.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Prime Minister that both delegations initiated small group discussions focusing on technical issues within the JBC’s purview, preceding the main meeting. The discussions are set to continue the following day, with the Ministry noting that the meeting atmosphere was positive and both parties are advancing in their negotiations.

The Thai delegation is optimistic that ongoing dialogues will alleviate current tensions and pave the way for sustainable solutions. Historically, the JBC mechanism has been effective in resolving bilateral issues, fostering cooperation in various sectors, including the construction of the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge at multiple locations, showcasing the collaborative spirit between the neighboring countries.

The Prime Minister reiterated her commitment to monitoring the meeting’s progress and is keen to receive the final report. She also urged the Thai representatives and associated agencies to prioritize national interests as the core principle guiding these negotiations.
