Bangkok: Police are intensifying their investigation into the financial dealings of Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu, focusing on the donation money trails spanning 20-30 years. The inquiry follows revelations that funds were channeled to multiple accounts, including foundations and various individuals, prompting authorities to seek information from the abbot.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat Pankaew, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, led a meeting with three key agencies to assess the progress in the “Dr. B-Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu” case. The agencies involved are the Crime Suppression Division, the Anti-Corruption and Misconduct Division, and the Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission. The primary agenda was to establish investigative guidelines, with Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat confirming that no arrest warrants have been issued yet.
Following the meeting, which lasted over an hour, Pol. Maj. Gen. Charoonkiat shared that several issues have been clarified, but some areas still require additional evidence. He mentioned plans to invite the abbot, Luang Por Alongkot, and other relevant parties to provide explanations. He also noted that any investigation into the temple’s operations would be based on the committee’s findings, ensuring minimal disruption unless warranted.
The investigation is scrutinizing potential corruption or fraud, with suspicions arising from the temple’s financial activities. While legal action remains a possibility, authorities are currently focused on gathering comprehensive evidence. The temple’s financial records have come under scrutiny due to inconsistencies between the large donations received and the declining number of visitors and advancements in AIDS treatment.
Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu, known for its AIDS treatment services over the past three decades, has seen significant donations. However, the allocation of these funds has raised concerns, necessitating a detailed investigation. The absence of immediate legal actions is attributed to the historical nature of the incidents, requiring a meticulous examination of evidence and witness testimonies.
Despite the ongoing investigation, officials have assured that the temple continues its operations, including receiving donations. Allegations of longstanding irregularities, as reported by a former nurse, are being thoroughly examined.
