Bangkok: The Port Authority has implemented stringent controls and facilitation measures for the upcoming long holidays from July 10-13, 2025, and August 9-12, 2025. Mr. Wiwat Chitcherdwong, Deputy Director-General of the Marine Department for Safety, chaired the meeting to devise an action plan and enforce safety protocols in light of Asarnha Bucha Day, Khao Phansa Day, and the Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother alongside National Mother’s Day.
According to Thai News Agency, these holiday periods see increased travel as people and tourists return to their hometowns or visit tourist attractions via waterways such as rivers, canals, ponds, reservoirs, dams, and the sea. The Marine Department is tasked with ensuring orderly navigation and the safe use of boats and piers during these times. This includes preparing a comprehensive safety plan, announcing safety measures, establishing a water safety center, and forming a working group to inspect passenger boats, restaurant boats, and piers. The department is working in collaboration with agencies such as the Royal Thai Navy, Royal Thai Police, Marine Police Division, and various foundations and volunteer networks to maintain water safety.
The Marine Department has mobilized 811 personnel and 49 security boats, comprising 188 security officers from the central office and 623 from regional offices, to implement water safety measures and facilitate public movement during the long holiday. Emphasis has been placed on strict inspections and the dissemination of safety measures to local operators. Tourists are required to wear life jackets, check the readiness of boats before use, and ensure life-saving equipment is readily accessible. Boat owners, captains, and crew members are advised to verify equipment readiness. All officers are instructed to work cohesively with other agencies to ensure safety and minimize water-related accidents. Continuous weather monitoring and adherence to government announcements are also mandated. For any unsafe water incidents, the Marine Department hotline at 1199 is available 24/7.
