Prime Minister Anutin Appoints Woraphat Thanyawong as Deputy Finance Minister

Bangkok: Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has announced the appointment of Woraphat Thanyawong, the former managing director of Krungthai Bank, as the new Deputy Finance Minister. The Prime Minister and Woraphat have known each other for three decades, and Anutin expressed confidence in Woraphat’s ability to contribute to the tax negotiation team without concerns about his past affiliations with the previous government.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin made the announcement during an informal meeting at his wife’s coffee shop, where he shared a casual moment with Woraphat over iced tea and a Danish burger. Anutin praised Woraphat’s extensive experience and qualifications, noting his role as an advisor to Pichai Chunhavajira, the former Finance Minister under Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra’s government. Anutin emphasized that Woraphat’s familiarity with the Ministry of Finance and his previous work in tax negotiations would ensure a seamless transition.

When questioned about Woraphat’s ties to the previous administration, Anutin dismissed any concerns, highlighting their long-standing relationship and shared vision for financial reforms. Anutin stressed the importance of continuity and expressed satisfaction with the decision not to start from scratch, as Woraphat’s prior experience would facilitate smooth operations within the ministry.

Woraphat Thanyawong expressed his gratitude and honor upon receiving the invitation to join the government. He emphasized his commitment to leveraging his 30 years of experience in the capital market and his recent role as Chief Advisor to Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira. Woraphat highlighted the challenges facing the Ministry of Finance, including public and household debt, and stressed the importance of a unified team to address these issues effectively.

Woraphat acknowledged that although he is new to politics, his financial background and longstanding relationship with the Prime Minister would enable him to contribute meaningfully. He expressed optimism that the prospective Finance Minister, a seasoned veteran of the Ministry, would ensure continuity and effective governance.

During the announcement, Prime Minister Anutin engaged warmly with the media and Woraphat, humorously remarking on the weight of the microphone. Following the event, Anutin was seen assisting his parents, Mr. Chawarat and Mrs. Tasanee, into a car, demonstrating his commitment to family amidst his busy schedule.

As the cabinet formation process continues, Anutin remains focused on assembling a team that shares a common goal of addressing the country’s financial challenges and driving progressive reforms.
