Bangkok: The Prime Minister is not attending the United Nations General Assembly due to concerns about returning in time for his policy statement to Parliament. He emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of sovereignty and confirmed that the Blue Cover Policy draft is complete and will be submitted to the Cabinet for a special meeting.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, explained his decision regarding the UNGA World Leaders’ Meeting. He discussed the situation with the new administration and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressing concerns about missing the policy statement to Parliament. He highlighted that there is no signed agreement yet, but a clear direction for managing the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia once the government assumes office.
Mr. Anutin downplayed concerns about missing an opportunity to build international confidence, stating that confidence stems from government management and public support, rather than international forums. He added that the Thai-Cambodian border situation is well-known internationally and emphasized that the government’s policies are already clear to the international community.
Regarding Cambodia’s accusations of Thailand violating various points, Mr. Anutin stated that discussions with relevant agencies have been held, and he will wait for everything to be in order before negotiating. He stressed the importance of the policy statement, which he hopes will be presented to Parliament next week.
A special Cabinet meeting is scheduled to discuss the government’s draft policy, which will then be submitted to the House of Representatives. Members will have three days to review it before discussions commence. Mr. Anutin also addressed constitutional amendment, confirming it is part of the government’s plan and will be included in the draft policy statement.
Regarding cost of living concerns, such as expressway fees, Mr. Anutin stated that these issues will be addressed in the policy announcement. He concluded by noting that today’s party meeting is a regular one, with coalition government leaders meeting as usual at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.
