Prime Minister Urges Synchronization of Thai-Cambodian Checkpoints for Trade Benefits

Surin: The Prime Minister convened a strategic meeting to address the Thai-Cambodian border situation and called for synchronized opening and closing times of checkpoints to facilitate trade. Expressing gratitude to the 2nd Army’s commander and local personnel for managing pressures without resorting to violence, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of safeguarding lives and correcting public misperceptions caused by misinformation.

According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, arrived at Buriram Airport and was greeted by Lieutenant General Boonsin Phadklang. She then proceeded to Surin Province, where she was welcomed by the Surin Governor, Mr. Chamnan Chuenta. Traveling to Kab Choeng Hospital, she chaired a meeting focused on resolving border issues and supporting residents in seven provinces. Key attendees included Deputy Prime Ministers Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai and Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, alongside General Nattapol Nakphanit and Mr. Arsit Sampantharat.

Upon arrival, the Prime Minister was met by officials, youth groups, and MPs from the Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai Parties. She received a briefing from the Surin Governor on the province’s border dynamics, which include a 125-kilometer stretch with Cambodia and 54 natural passes. Previously, the border was open daily from 08:00 to 22:00, but new measures adjusted this to specific days with reduced hours, resulting in limited overlap with Cambodian timings.

The Prime Minister questioned the possibility of aligning checkpoint operations with Cambodia for mutual trade benefit. In response, the 2nd Army’s commander acknowledged potential political challenges but affirmed ongoing coordination efforts with Cambodian counterparts.

Further discussions highlighted the significance of peace and education regarding emergency protocols, such as bomb shelters. The Prime Minister urged inclusion of these lessons in school curricula to ensure preparedness.

Acknowledging the pressures faced by on-ground personnel, the Prime Minister reiterated the need for peace and non-violence, emphasizing the importance of clear communication to prevent misunderstandings. She praised the collaboration between the Ministries of Defense and Interior and emphasized the collective responsibility to maintain national sovereignty and peace.

The Prime Minister concluded by asserting the government’s support for local officials and the importance of correcting misinformation that could lead to societal chaos. She urged all parties to work cohesively, underscoring Thailand’s shared heritage and the need for dedicated service to the nation.

“Moving forward, the priority is peace, with detailed discussions on specific issues, ensuring clarity and avoiding unnecessary confusion,” the Prime Minister affirmed.
