Prime Minister Views Thai-Cambodian Situation as Positive Amid Global Engagements

Gyeongju: The Prime Minister expressed delight at Thailand’s return to the world stage, stating that leaders from numerous countries have responded positively to recent discussions. He regarded the Thai-Cambodian situation as promising, emphasizing the need for responsible agencies to engage with local communities. The Thai army and the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) are actively seeking a resolution to the jointly claimed area.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul shared insights from his participation in the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea. He expressed satisfaction with Thailand’s resurgence on the global stage following a change in government. He noted that the response from international leaders had been positive during both formal and informal discussions, which were direct and without the need for interpreters. Even leaders from conflict-affected countries demonstrated a constructive approach, underscoring the importance of conflict resolution and peace efforts.

In regards to the Thai-Cambodian situation, Thailand has fulfilled its obligations, while Cambodia has initiated steps to implement the agreed terms. Although initial challenges may arise, the overall trajectory remains positive. Ongoing discussions are taking place between the military, responsible for executing the agreement, and they have been providing continuous updates on the matter.

When questioned about how the residents of Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo, who wish to address Cambodian encroachment, will be engaged during the peace agreement process, the Prime Minister assured that responsible entities are working towards understanding and managing the situation. The management of the claimed area falls under Article 4 of the Thai-Cambodian peace agreement, necessitating the formation of a working group to reach a joint conclusion. He mentioned consultations with the military, who are set to negotiate with Mr. Prasat Prasatwinitchai, Chairman of the JBC, to clarify issues surrounding the claimed area through dialogue.
