Ratcha Group and SPI Poised to Invest in Small Modular Reactors in Industrial Estates

Bangkok: Ratcha Group Public Company Limited and Saha Pathana Inter-Holding Public Company Limited are gearing up to invest in Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in industrial estates as soon as the government provides the opportunity, aiming for a stable and sustainable energy transition.

According to Thai News Agency, the two companies organized the seminar ‘Thailand’s SMR Energy Forum – A Global Dialogue on SMR Deployment’ to share knowledge and experiences on SMR technology. This clean energy technology has the potential to support Thailand’s energy security strategy and transition towards the target of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. The seminar addressed key issues essential for the future use of SMR in Thailand, including technology development, fuel and supply chain management, environmental and safety management, regulations, investment, SMR personnel development, and social acceptance.

Mr. Nitat Vorapanpipat, CEO of Ratcha Group, emphasized that SMR technology is an alternative that can stabilize the electrical system, supporting more renewable energy and reducing the risk of power outages during high demand. He mentioned that many countries have advanced in SMR technology, and Thailand plans to introduce it by studying and preparing in various aspects. Ratcha Group and SPI are ready to invest in SMR to build investor confidence and attract further investment, targeting installation in industrial estates. The details of production capacity depend on feasibility studies, but they are ready to invest once the government opens the opportunity.

Mr. Wichai Kulsomphob, CEO of SPI, noted that while SMR technology might be new to Thailand, it is gaining significant global attention. It is anticipated that SMR will become part of clean energy, replacing fossil fuel power plants in Thailand. Although still in the planning and study phase, SPI sees the need for efficient, safe, and sustainable energy alternatives. The seminar marks the beginning of collaboration that could transform Thailand’s energy landscape amid the global shift towards Carbon Neutrality and green energy.
