Retired Military Officer Arrested for Attempted Robbery at Convenience Store

Lopburi: A lone robber was apprehended after attempting to rob a convenience store in the middle of the night, causing a stir in Lopburi City. The perpetrator, a 66-year-old retired military officer, was swiftly arrested by local police.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident took place at a convenience store inside a gas station located on Chomphon P. Pibulsongkram Road, Tha Sala Subdistrict, Mueang Lopburi District. Officers from the Lopburi City Police Station responded to the scene where a gunman had entered but did not manage to steal any property.

Ms. Pawina, an employee at the store, recounted the terrifying experience. Around midnight, a man wearing a black coat, shorts, and a black wool hat entered the store brandishing a handgun and demanded she turn off the lights. In a state of shock, Ms. Pawina retreated to the back of the shop with the assailant following closely. Customers fled the scene, and the assailant attempted to access the cash drawers, failing to find any money before escaping in a van.

The police quickly acted, intercepting the suspect’s vehicle at a nearby three-way intersection. The suspect, identified as Lt. Col. Komsanthi, was found with his wife at a nearby roadside shop. A search of their vehicle revealed a loaded .32 caliber revolver, leading to the officer’s arrest. Lt. Col. Komsanthi, reportedly suffering from mental illness, was incoherent during initial questioning.

Mrs. Tachanee, the suspect’s wife, expressed disbelief over her husband’s involvement, noting his recent behavior seemed normal. She explained that he had been undergoing treatment for mental illness and was scheduled for a medication adjustment soon.

Currently, Lt. Col. Komsanthi faces charges for carrying an unregistered firearm in a public area. Additional charges related to the attempted robbery are pending further investigation, including a review of surveillance footage and testimony from witnesses.
