Retired Teachers Turn to Pomelo Farming, Earning Significant Monthly Income.

Trang: Retired educators ‘Uncle Thet’ and ‘Auntie Jin’ have embarked on a successful new chapter in their lives by adopting mixed farming practices in Trang Province. They have strategically allocated 4 rai of their land to cultivate a variety of pomelos, resulting in a lucrative venture that generates tens of thousands of baht each month. With promising outcomes, they are considering expanding their pomelo cultivation in the near future.

According to Thai News Agency, the pomelo garden managed by Mr. Thetsak, known as Uncle Thet, and his wife Mrs. Yuphaphak, or Auntie Jin, is located in Pak Pai Village, Nong Trut Subdistrict, Mueang District, Trang Province. Both in their 60s, the couple retired from their teaching careers in Nakhon Ratchasima Province and embraced mixed farming on their 44 rai property. Their estate includes a 10 rai rubber plantation and a 30 rai oil palm plantation, with 4 rai dedicated to mixed fruit cultivation, prominently featuring pomelos along with custard apples, red-fleshed guava
s, crystal longans, and durians.

Uncle Thet and Auntie Jin note that pomelo farming is relatively straightforward. The garden, now in its second year, has been productive. They have planted several pomelo varieties, including 20 Siam Ruby trees, 8 Ploychompoo trees, and 3 Khao Nam Phueng trees, and are planning to introduce Bai Toey pomelos. Each pomelo, when fully grown, exceeds 2 kilograms and sells for 60-80 baht or more, depending on the variety. Harvesting will continue through November, with 20-30 fruits collected each session. They employ bagging techniques to protect the pomelos from fruit flies, ensuring high-quality, toxin-free produce.

Uncle Thet shared that their monthly earnings from pomelo sales are sufficient to sustain their lifestyle, often reaching tens of thousands of baht. He cherishes the joy of tending to his garden, which allows him to consume homegrown produce, share with neighbors, and sell the surplus at fair prices. Looking ahead, he is enthusiastic about expanding their pomelo pl
antation.
