Bangkok: Rangsiman Rome, a party-list MP for the Prachachon Party and chairman of the Security Committee, has called for immediate action from the Prime Minister to combat the “Red Wa” drug crisis. Rome highlighted that it is the Prime Minister’s responsibility to lead this effort without waiting for intervention from former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
According to Thai News Agency, Rome emphasized the urgent need for a decisive government strategy against the Wa State, identified as the largest source of methamphetamine globally. He warned that the ongoing inaction would exacerbate drug issues within Thailand, which is already both a destination and a hub for drug exports. He criticized the Wa State for their disregard towards the Thai government, citing their involvement in illicit activities like gold and rare earth mining, and environmental degradation in the Kok River, as reasons for the continued tensions.
Rome suggested that diplomatic efforts should include discussions with ASEAN countries and China, due to its proximity to Myanmar, home to the Wa State. He proposed a graduated approach from mild to severe measures, with a clear timeline for action.
In response to Thaksin’s offer to leverage personal relations for negotiations, Rome insisted that the responsibility lies with the current government, particularly Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra. He argued that relying on Thaksin undermines the Prime Minister’s authority and could contribute to the Wa State’s lack of respect for Thailand. Rome urged Thaksin to support his daughter in fulfilling her role as Prime Minister, rather than overshadowing her leadership.
