Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army has extended an invitation to ASEAN military attach©s to discuss and gain insights into the current situation at the Thai-Cambodian border. This follows the establishment of a team designated to monitor the ceasefire between the two nations.
According to Thai News Agency, Army spokesman Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari announced that the Army, through its Intelligence Department, organized a meeting with ASEAN Defense Attaches to Thailand. The session, held at the Srisitthisongkhram Building within the Army Headquarters, was led by the Malaysian Defense Attache and presided over by Lt. Gen. Kamchai Wongsri, the Director-General of the Army Intelligence Department.
The key focus of the discussions was the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly the formation of the Interim ASEAN Defense Attaches Monitoring Team. This team is tasked with monitoring the ceasefire along the border, a move that follows the ceasefire agreement reached in Malaysia on July 28, 2015. The agreement called for the immediate creation of a temporary monitoring team made up of military attaches from ASEAN member states, with the goal of monitoring the situation and fostering trust between the two countries.
The discussions also covered the potential future establishment of the ASEAN Monitoring Team, which would become the main mechanism for overseeing the situation. This topic is set to be further examined at the upcoming General Border Committee meeting between Thailand and Cambodia on August 4, 2025.
The Royal Thai Army has expressed its readiness to take all necessary actions to ensure effective outcomes, reaffirming Thailand’s commitment to international principles of non-aggression and non-violence. The goal is to resolve conflicts amicably and promote sustainable international peace and stability.
