Bangkok: The Royal Thai Army recently conducted a media tour of the Ta Muen Thom Temple, a move aimed at promoting tourism to the ancient site amidst ongoing accusations from Cambodia regarding Thai aggression. The army refrained from addressing Cambodia’s claims directly, focusing instead on fostering communication between the two nations to prevent escalating tensions.
According to Thai News Agency, Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, clarified that the tour was initiated by Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army. The intent was to provide the media with firsthand experience of the Thai-Cambodian border areas, including Surin, Buriram, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. The tour commenced at Ta Muen Thom Temple, a site registered with the Fine Arts Department since 1935, following a briefing by the Suranaree Forces.
When questioned about past conflicts at the temple site, Maj. Gen. Winthai indicated there were no recent reports of concern. He emphasized the cooperative relationship between Thai and Cambodian officials in the area, noting that minor disputes have not escalated into significant issues.
Regarding accusations from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on social media, Maj. Gen. Winthai stated that Thailand’s communication strategy focuses on factual information without attempting to amplify conflicts. He stressed the importance of neutral communication to prevent misunderstandings and maintain peace.
In response to inquiries about potential border security measures following increased tourist visits to the temple, Maj. Gen. Winthai mentioned that discussions about border infrastructure are ongoing. While there is no immediate plan for construction, the Royal Thai Army is committed to maintaining order and safety in the region.
Maj. Gen. Winthai also addressed community concerns, highlighting the army’s civil affairs initiatives to reassure local residents and prevent panic. He expressed optimism about the economic benefits of increased tourism, noting that the recent surge in visitors has been well-received and is seen as a positive development for the area.
The Royal Thai Army remains focused on facilitating a safe and welcoming environment for tourists and ensuring stability along the Thai-Cambodian border.
