Senator Angkana Criticizes Supporters for Provoking Military Involvement in Border Dispute

Bangkok: Senator Angkana Neelapaijit has criticized supporters who are provoking soldiers to intervene in the Thai-Cambodian border situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Senator Angkana emphasized that no one would willingly cede their home and criticized the Prime Minister’s handling of the issue, stressing the importance of maintaining open communication and finding peaceful resolutions.

Senator Angkana addressed the complexities of the Thai-Cambodian border conflict, highlighting the social tensions involved. She noted that despite the close cultural ties between villagers on both sides, Cambodia’s aggressive stance and the push for international arbitration require a diplomatic approach from Thailand. She urged supporters to desist from encouraging military action, referring to global examples where civilian governments have managed conflicts.

Senator Angkana expressed her belief in fostering regional harmony and peace through negotiations that respect mutual rights. She suggested evaluating the effectiveness of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) while considering broader bilateral talks on security and cooperation beyond trade and investment.

When questioned about the Prime Minister’s rapport with Cambodian leaders, Senator Angkana reiterated that territorial integrity is non-negotiable. She underscored the necessity of dialogue that respects human rights and avoids conflict, referencing Cambodia’s history of accepting Thai refugees as a potential avenue for understanding.

The senator also commented on the longstanding relationship between former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodian leaders, expressing confidence in the government’s ability to manage the situation without compromising sovereignty, while maintaining amicable relations with Cambodia.
