Senator Noppadol Moves to Address Escalating Cyber Crime Problem

Bangkok: Senator Noppadol is preparing to propose a motion aimed at tackling the escalating issue of cyber crime, particularly focusing on call center gangs, following the failure of state mechanisms to address the problem in a timely manner. The damages from these crimes amount to 100 million baht daily, with a staggering total of over 10,000 million baht in the past six months.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Noppadol Inna, a member of the Senate, is set to propose the motion during the Senate meeting on July 15. The motion seeks to establish a committee tasked with studying social problems that impact the lives of Thai citizens, with a particular emphasis on online crimes perpetrated by call center gangs. Despite the introduction of a new Cyber Decree, the problem persists, prompting Mr. Noppadol to advocate for Senate involvement in studying and recommending solutions. The financial impact is significant, with daily expenditures reaching around 100 million baht, translating to 20-30 billion baht annua
lly.

Mr. Noppadol emphasized that enforcing the law effectively could mitigate the problem, noting that many business operators along the border are Thai nationals. He highlighted that neighboring countries exploit signals from Thailand to perpetrate these crimes. When questioned about whether the current unstable government could resolve the issues, Mr. Noppadol expressed confidence, suggesting that the current political climate might be more conducive to addressing the problem compared to previous administrations with multiple coalition parties.

He stated that the government’s success or failure in resolving this issue would directly impact its reputation, as the authority to address these matters lies with the government. The motion underscores the severe impact of social problems on the Thai population, pointing out the state mechanisms’ inability to promptly address online crimes linked to gambling and drugs, which exacerbate the country’s economic and social challenges.

The Technology Crime Investiga
tion Bureau’s website reports that online crimes caused damages amounting to 12,779,626,726 baht from January 1 to June 18, 2025, with only 2 percent of the affected accounts being successfully frozen, totaling 295,764,203 baht.

The urgency of these social threats necessitates Senate intervention to provide recommendations and collaboratively seek tangible solutions. Reporters noted that Mr. Mongkol Surachat, President of the Senate, recently chaired a Senate Affairs Committee meeting on July 9, where a motion to establish a special committee to address four critical issues was considered. This includes studying problems related to the Thai economy, social challenges affecting citizens, security issues along borders, and disaster resolution strategies, with a 90-day review period.
