Bangkok: Senator Wiraphan has criticized the government over its handling of the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia, calling for the establishment of a 24-hour war room to ensure clear communication channels.
According to Thai News Agency, Senator Wiraphan condemned the government’s ineffective negotiation tactics and suggested that existing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) from 2000 and 2001 be completely discarded. He emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for the lives of soldiers and civilians accountable, urging a more assertive approach from Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Dr. Weeraphan Suwannammai, a member of the Senate, addressed the media regarding the conflict at the Thai-Cambodian border. He alleged that a Thai hospital came under attack from Cambodian forces, with the first shots originating from the Cambodian side. Dr. Weeraphan highlighted that Cambodian schools were closed in anticipation of the conflict, while Thai civilians became the target, labeling the act a war crime.
Dr. Weeraphan called upon the international community and the United Nations to condemn Cambodia’s actions and demand accountability. He expressed concerns about Cambodia’s development of communities and military bases near the border since 2011, which complicates retaliation efforts by Thailand. He criticized Cambodia for using civilians as human shields and urged the Thai government to engage in negotiations with its neighbor.
Expressing dissatisfaction with recent negotiations, Dr. Weeraphan stressed the need for a new MOU by 2025 that aligns with humanitarian principles and is acceptable to the Thai populace. He questioned the accountability for civilian and military losses, advocating for a more aggressive but non-provocative stance by Thailand.
Dr. Viraphan also called for maintaining clear territorial boundaries and emphasized that Thailand’s peace-loving nature should not be mistaken for tolerance of aggression. He criticized the unconditional ceasefire announcement, questioning its appropriateness and effectiveness, suggesting that negotiations must include conditions.
Dr. Weeraphan believes the recent negotiations failed, calling for a change in the government’s approach. He stressed the importance of clear communication from the government, warning against the spread of misinformation in the absence of official updates.
He reiterated the potential for resolution through negotiations, emphasizing the need for a strategic stance to prevent further casualties, while maintaining hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
