Sentul Circuit to be redesigned: W Java Governor

The Sentul International Circuit in Sentul village, Babakan Madang Sub-district, Bogor District, West Java, will be redesigned in 2022, Governor Ridwan Kamil said in an official statement released on Monday.

“Next year, it will be redesigned and revitalized to become one of the best circuits in the world named West Java Sentul International Circuit,” the governor informed.

He expressed the hope that the circuit would hold another world-class event so that local tourism and the people’s economy would improve.

The 3.96-kilometer (km) circuit, which has 11 turns, was the venue for the 1996 and 1997 MotoGP, he noted. Back then, the tournament was titled FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix, he said.

In addition, Kamil asked all parties to support the attempt so that the redesigned circuit can become the pride of Indonesia—the same as the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit.

The plan was welcomed by the general chairperson of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI), Bambang Soesatyo.

“We have known about the commitment of West Java Governor to renovate the Sentul International Circuit to become a prominent racing venue. We must support it,” he remarked.

He said he expected that the revitalization of the circuit — which was inaugurated in 1993 — will improve the achievements of national racing athletes.

“Hopefully, it will generate more talented riders,” he remarked.

On Sunday (December 12, 2021), IMI organized the 2021 Presidential Cup Underbone Motorcycle Race at the Sentul International Circuit.

Initially, the tournament was planned to be opened by President Joko Widodo, Soesatyo said. However, the President could not attend the event as he had an important agenda, he added.

“Instead, he sent his greetings to the participants to keep their fighting spirit,” Soesatyo said.

He attended the racing event along with the West Java Governor.
