Somsak Orders Distribution of N95 Masks to Combat Odor from Corpses

Bangkok: Somsak has directed the Department of Health and the Department of Disease Control to distribute N95 masks to citizens and border officials in response to the odor from the corpses of Cambodian soldiers. The measure aims to prevent dizziness caused by the stench, which, although non-pathogenic, poses discomfort.

According to Thai News Agency, Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin addressed the issue of the odor from a Cambodian soldier’s corpse near the border. He has mandated the distribution of N95 masks to military personnel and evacuees, emphasizing that the smell, while not harmful in terms of pathogens, can cause dizziness and disrupt daily activities if not managed properly. Security forces have ordered evacuees to remain away from their homes until the situation is resolved.

Mr. Somsak explained that the odor results from a chemical reaction in the corpse, which, while not infectious, can cause discomfort and health issues for individuals sensitive to strong smells. He advised using N95 masks or deodorizing sprays as preventive measures. The ministry has prioritized care for vulnerable groups and clarified that there is no immediate threat of other epidemics. The odor issue remains challenging due to the inability to manage the situation within Cambodia’s borders.
