Sports Law to improve national sports management: DPR RI Speaker

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The recently-passed Sports Law will serve as a catalyst in improving the national sports management system, House of Representatives (DPR RI) Speaker Puan Maharani has opined.

The new law has provided the legal basis for comprehensive and sustainable development of sports that will bolster the coaching of national athletes in the future, she said.

“The Sports Law has also provided the legal basis for addressing disputes in sports organizations, as well as enhancing the sports development system that will benefit the quality and achievements of national sports,” Maharani noted in a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Speaker further said that the law would ensure the improvement of the national sports environment, fulfill sports infrastructure needs, and ensure equal access to infrastructure for the people.

Earlier on Tuesday, the DPR RI ratified the Sports Bill, drafted to amend Law No. 3 of 2005 on the National Sports System, into law.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, reiterated the urgent need for passing the bill to replace Law No. 3 of 2005, which served as the legal basis for national sports development for 17 years, had become outdated, and lost relevance in the current situation.

Besides acknowledging the current development in the national sports, the new Sports Law is also expected to finalize the status of sports organizations to diminish leadership conflicts that have haunted some national sports organizations, he remarked.

“Hence, we will no longer see sports organizations engaging in conflicts and disputes because they will instead complement each other and harmonize themselves to fulfill the common goal of national sports development which, according to the Constitution, is to achieve the people’s welfare,” Amali said.

The minister expressed the hope that the Sports Law will provide legal clarity to the central and regional authorities in developing sports activities in the regions, including for public and competitive sports.
