Bangkok: The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has initiated efforts to mitigate the impacts of flash floods and forest runoff in the southern region by establishing a dedicated monitoring team. The initiative follows an order from Weerit, urging relevant agencies to maintain vigilant monitoring and readiness to assist the public around the clock.
According to Thai News Agency, Governor Veerit Amrapal of the State Railway of Thailand disclosed the directive in response to the Office of National Water Resources’ announcement. The announcement highlighted the need to monitor flash floods, forest runoff, mudslides, and urban flooding in the southern region from November 20-26. The governor emphasized the importance of implementing safety measures for train operations and maintaining close supervision of the situation to ensure public safety throughout their travel. This directive comes in light of the heavy rains typical in the southern region from early November to mid-January, which pose a risk of flash floods
and forest runoff.
Mr. Amrapal also ordered that staff and maintenance tools be on standby at all times to address potential flash floods. This includes increasing the frequency of road inspections, area surveys, and clearing canals and drains to enhance water drainage efficiency and prevent flooding. Additionally, there is a focus on removing weeds and branches along the railway that might obstruct visibility. The automatic barrier system, signal signs, train warning signs, and traffic signs at crossings are to be regularly checked to ensure they are operational, thereby safeguarding travelers.
Station masters and local officials have been instructed to continuously monitor water conditions, swiftly assess and address immediate issues to provide timely assistance during emergencies. They are also tasked with ensuring waiting areas and facilities for passengers are adequately prepared, thereby offering reassurance to the public using the service.
Mr. Wirit stated, “The State Railway of Thailand places impo
rtance on the safety of its service users. Therefore, it has prepared various measures to monitor and take immediate action in the event of an emergency. Most importantly, it must have the least impact on people’s travel on all routes.”
