Supportive policies necessary for responding to AI development: govt

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Supportive policies are required to properly respond to the development of artificial intelligence (AI), according to Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics Nezar Patria.”To respond to the development of AI, we need to formulate supportive policies and make efforts to enhance digital literacy,” he noted in a press release received here on Monday. The deputy minister made the statement during a session of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2023 in Kyoto, Japan. Patria observed that the imprudent use of AI could lead to various unwanted events, including the violation of privacy and the misuse of intellectual property, while noting that all parties should handle technology carefully to avoid untoward incidents. He then noted that the Indonesian Government is fully aware of the importance of handling and mitigating the risks of the misuse of AI. Hence, Indonesia has been developing an AI-powered governmental ecosystem through the implementation of nation-wide policies since 2020, he added. “The government has issued the 2020-2045 Indonesia’s National Strategy Document for Artificial Intelligence, Classification of AI Based Programming Business Line Development Standards and the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Law, among others,” Patria stated. Indonesia has also echoed its commitment to properly controlling AI by supporting the idea of the G20 AI Principles during Japan’s presidency in the G20 in 2019, he stressed. Meanwhile, in his speech at the IGF 2023, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida underscored the importance of balance between AI development and the regulations that govern it. “In the context of AI, the balance between promoting (AI) and enforcing regulations is needed. Only then, we can gain optimal benefits from AI and mitigate its negative risks,” he remarked. Vinton Gray Cerf, known as one of “the fathers of the internet,” also participated in the IGF 2023. He believes that people should not only discuss how to manage AI but also deliberate on the source of materials used by the technology. One can only determine the quality of AI after identifying the source of the materials it used, he noted, adding that AI is not a flawless technology since it can result in errors.
