Surakarta: Solo 5G Summit 2023 Marks a Milestone in Indonesia’s Digital Vision

Surakarta (ANTARA) — A significant gathering of stakeholders in the 5G ecosystem took place at Indonesia’s first 5G park, the Solo Techno Park, for an industry summit. The Solo 5G Summit 2023, part of the 5G live network and 5G live use case initiatives, represents the most comprehensive collaboration in Indonesia to date, involving operators, vendors, government support, industry associations, and academic institutions.

According to Antara News Agency, the summit focused on discussing current business trends, challenges, and opportunities related to 5G technology, particularly its application in consumer, home, and business settings in Indonesia. Key topics included spectrum roadmap alignment, milestone requirements, license price mechanisms, and increasing the ICT industry’s contribution to Indonesia’s digital transformation. Additionally, the summit emphasized the necessity of 5G infrastructure, including fiber connectivity, to deliver an optimal 5G user experience.

Prominent attendees announcing a joint consensus on 5G included Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Communication and Informatics; Erick Thohir, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises; Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Ministry of Industry; Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Health; Herlan Wijanarko, Director of Network and IT Solutions at PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk; Sarwoto Atmosutarno, Chairman of Indonesia Telematics Society (Mastel); Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Surakarta City Mayor; Adiwinahyu Basuki Sigit, Director of Sales at Telkomsel; Peng Song, president of ICT Strategy and Marketing at Huawei; and other representatives from vendors, operators, and academics. This group underscored their readiness to support the sustainable growth of the cellular industry and ICT as a key pillar in Indonesia’s digital transformation.

Minister Budi Arie Setiadi, in his keynote remarks, mentioned Indonesia’s goal of becoming a top 5 global economy by 2045, with ICT infrastructure as a foundational pillar of this vision. He emphasized the importance of equitable coverage and high-quality internet connectivity across Indonesia and hailed the joint initiative for fostering multi-sector collaboration in accelerating digital transformation and boosting the digital economy.

Sarwoto Atmosutarno of Mastel pointed out the need to realign spectrum allocation planning and full-fiber infrastructure development with industry requirements and demand forecasts to ensure revenue generation and social welfare. He emphasized the importance of adopting global benchmarks and use cases strategically in Indonesia.

Analysts predict that business investment in Indonesia could increase by IDR 591 trillion in 2030 and IDR 719 trillion in 2035 if 5G and full-fiber connectivity networks are fully implemented. Following a Memorandum of Understanding between Surakarta City and Telkomsel, Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka expressed hopes that the new 5G internet would help transform the city into a reference model for other Indonesian cities.

Adiniwahyu Basuki Sigit of Telkomsel stressed the company’s commitment to leading the development of the 5G service ecosystem in Indonesia, aligning with the Digital Indonesia Vision 2030 and 2045. Telkomsel plans to utilize its infrastructure assets, technology, and digital talent to foster collaboration with various stakeholders for an inclusive and sustainable digital future.

Peng Song from Huawei spoke about the global progress of 5G in network deployment, user development, ecosystem building, digital experience, industrial applications, and business value. He recommended expediting 5G rollout in Indonesia to capitalize on its benefits, drawing parallels between investments in high-speed rail and 5G technology in driving economic growth.

The summit also showcased several 5G use cases, including 5G Giga Experience, 5G Smart Broadcast, 5G VR/AR in Smart Solo, and 5G FWA to Smart Home, demonstrating the diverse applications of 5G technology in enhancing digital experiences and contributing to economic development.
