Surin: The Ministry of Commerce is taking significant steps to register ‘Surin Beef’ as a new Geographical Indication (GI) product for Surin Province. The premium beef, known for its marbling fat comparable to Japanese standards, is produced from a crossbreed of local hybrid cattle and 100% Wagyu breed, promising sustainable opportunities and increased income for the community.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Kunakorn Preechachanachai, Advisor to the Minister of Commerce, announced that the Department of Intellectual Property is set to recognize ‘Surin Beef’ for its high quality and distinctive characteristics. The beef possesses a marbling score of 3 or higher on the Japanese beef grading scale, featuring pink-red meat that is tender and free from unpleasant odors when cooked. The cattle, comprising at least 50% Wagyu genetics, are raised on local grass and rice by-products such as rice straw, rice bran, and rice husks in Surin Province. The favorable climate aids in the health and growth of the cattle, ensuring they remain robust and disease-resistant. Furthermore, the processing and trimming of the beef adhere to international standards, with current production exceeding 144,000 kilograms annually and generating a market value of over 43 million baht per year.
Mr. Kunakorn emphasized, “GI products are local identity products that reflect cultural wisdom, serving as a soft power linked to geographical locations. These products can convey unique identities globally and play a crucial role in empowering communities to create jobs and generate income.”
