Tangerang Police arrest two men for quarantine fraud

Tangerang Regional Police have arrested two men suspected of fraudulently offering self-quarantine services to a 63-year-old South Korea-born citizen.

The two men have been identified as S (41), a resident of Sudirman public house, Pasir Nangka village, Tigaraksa sub-district, and SR (50), a resident of Kampung Bugel, Kaduagung Village, Tigaraksa Sub-district, Tangerang District.

The victim, identified as WYN, has been naturalized as an Indonesian citizen, regional police head, Chief Commissioner Wahyu Sri Bintoro, said in Tangerang on Thursday.

When he was about to return to the country from a visit to South Korea, WYN reportedly asked his helper to take a quarantine permit at a mess located in his business complex in Pasir Barat village, Jambe Sub-district, Bintoro informed.

On August 24, 2021, WYN’s helper reportedly met with the two suspects at a restaurant in Tigaraksa and told them he was looking for a self-quarantine facility, he said.

“Therefore, the two suspects made a promise to help the victim’s demand,” he added.

The two suspects allegedly asked for Rp25 million saying they needed it to meet the requirements for self-quarantine, he informed.

“The victim’s helper then transferred the requested amount of money to suspect S’ bank account,” he said.

However, when the victim arrived in Indonesia on September 1, 2021, he was sent to quarantine at a location determined by the airport authorities and not the company’s mess, Bintoro said.

Feeling deceived, WYN immediately reported the incident to Tangerang Police, he said. Based on the results of the report, police officers arrested the two suspects from their homes on Monday (December 20, 2021), he added.

“Previously, the police had summoned the two suspects twice, but they did not respond,” Bintoro said.

The suspects will be charged under Articles 378 and/or 372 of the Criminal Code for fraud, with the possibility of imprisonment of over five years, he informed.
