Tanyigbe Traditional Council Affirms Position on Chieftaincy Legitimacy

Tanyigbe: The Tanyigbe Traditional Council has reaffirmed that Togbega Kodi Adiko VI, known in private life as Mr. Roland Kofi Adiko, remains the recognised Paramount Chief of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area. According to Ghana News Agency, a rejoinder to a publication on December 18 clarified the council's stance. The Secretary of the Traditional Council, Mr. Isaac Tawiah Gbortsu, stated that an appeal had been lodged with the National House of Chiefs against Togbe Etoe Kodzo II's claim to the Paramount Stool. He explained that under Section 34 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), the filing of an appeal operated as an automatic stay of execution, rendering any claims of nullification against Togbega Kodi Adiko VI as incorrect. The rejoinder was in response to a GNA article titled 'Tanyigbe Traditional Council Marks First Milestone, Urges Unity for Development', published on December 18, 2025, which featured Togbe Etoe Kodzo II expressing appreciation for the elevation of Tanyigbe to Traditional Council s tatus. The Traditional Council clarified that Togbe Etoe Kodzo II did not participate in the proceedings at the opening of the Tanyigbe Traditional Council on December 17, 2024, which was hosted by Togbega Kodi Adiko VI. The establishment of the Tanyigbe Traditional Council in December 2024 increased the number of Traditional Councils in the Volta Region to 75. Mr. Gbortsu reiterated that until the appeal was resolved, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI would continue to function as the Paramount Chief, collaborating with the Tanyigbe Traditional Council. The Traditional Council urged the public to respect the judicial process and avoid actions that could disrupt the appeal process. It emphasized the commitment to peace and unity, requesting that all parties avoid statements that might create confusion. In March 2025, the Judicial Committee of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs had upheld Togbe Etoe Kodzo II as Paramount Chief, based on its interpretation of customary arrangements. The committee found that the dual ens toolment of Mr. Roland Kofi Adiko was untenable under the circumstances. The chieftaincy dispute began in 2017, following the funeral of Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, leading to the installation of two separate individuals as Paramount Chiefs. The dispute was referred to the Judicial Committee for resolution. Historically, the Akoto family of the Anyidoto clan and the Adiko family of the Kodivi clan had a rotational arrangement for the Paramount Chief position.
