Thai and Cambodian Military Commanders Agree to Ceasefire Ahead of GBC Meeting

Bangkok: Thai and Cambodian military commanders have reached an agreement to cease hostilities and prohibit troop movements along their shared border. This agreement comes as both nations prepare for the upcoming General Border Committee (GBC) discussions scheduled for August 4, 2025.

According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suwaree, the Army spokesman, disclosed the outcomes of a crucial meeting held by military commanders from both countries in three separate border areas. The meeting took place today at 10:00 a.m. and resulted in a consensus to maintain peace and avoid any military actions that could lead to further tensions before the GBC meeting.

The first meeting involved the 1st Army Area of Thailand and the 5th Military Region from the Cambodian side, conducted at the Khlong Luek permanent border crossing in Aranyaprathet District, Sa Kaeo Province. It was led by the 1st Army Area Commander. Both parties agreed to halt troop movements to prevent misunderstandings and to establish direct communication channels for leaders at various levels when necessary.

Another meeting took place between the 2nd Army Region of Thailand and the 4th Military Region of Cambodia at the Chong Chom border crossing in Kab Choeng District, Surin Province. Led by the 2nd Army Region Commander, discussions centered on enforcing an immediate ceasefire and avoiding any use of force or weapons against civilians. The meeting also addressed the repatriation of wounded and deceased individuals from previous clashes. Both sides agreed to form a local coordination team to manage immediate concerns and prevent future incidents.

The final meeting, held online, involved the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Force (CBT) and Cambodia’s Military Region 3. Led by the Commander of the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defense Command, the discussions mirrored the agreements reached in the 1st Army Area meeting.

Major General Suwaree highlighted that prior to the meeting, the border situation had already stabilized with a ceasefire in place across all three areas. The agreement reached aims to uphold this stability and ensure a peaceful environment ahead of the GBC discussions.
