Bangkok: The Thai military has reiterated its right to self-defense under international law to protect the sovereignty of the nation and its people, following Cambodia’s intentional violation of the ceasefire agreement, which has undermined trust between the neighboring countries.
According to Thai News Agency, the Thai and Cambodian governments had agreed to cease military fighting along the border, effective from midnight on July 28, 2025, to pave the way for peace and cooperation. However, on July 29, 2025, Major General Witai Laithomya, spokesman for the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, confirmed that while Thailand had strictly adhered to the ceasefire agreement, Cambodia continued to fire weapons into Thai territory at several points.
This action by Cambodia is considered a deliberate violation of the agreement and undermines the mutual trust that should exist between the two nations. The Royal Thai Army condemns Cambodia’s behavior and reaffirms that Thailand will take countermeasures under its right of self-defense according to international law. Thailand maintains that its use of force is solely for protecting its sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.
Major General Laithomya stated, “When we stop, but he doesn’t… the world must know that Cambodia is a persistent violator of these agreements, a party that disregards international rules, a party that does not uphold any international agreements that have been announced on the world stage, and a threat to regional and global security.”
The Royal Thai Army calls on the international community to uphold the principles of truth, justice, and the rule of law to achieve peace, emphasizing that accepting such behavior could lead to injustice becoming the norm in the international system.
