Bangkok: The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) has stressed the importance of maintaining stringent control over red meat accelerators to safeguard consumer health. The Secretary-General of the Industrial Promotion Department (IPD) has called on all sectors to adhere to standards that ensure agricultural and livestock products are free from these accelerators, thereby promoting consumer safety and enhancing Thailand’s competitiveness in the global market.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Chaiwat Yothakhon, Secretary-General of the National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS), has commended the efforts of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for maintaining high standards and enforcing the prohibition on the use of red meat accelerators in animal feed and meat products. This regulatory measure aims to protect the health of Thai citizens and improve their quality of life. Notably, over the past two decades, there have been no reported health issues resulting from the consump
tion of these substances.
In a recent development, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with the FDA, the Department of Health, and the Office of Agricultural Economics to integrate operations related to food security, quality, and safety. The Secretary-General of the MOU highlighted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, through the Department of Livestock Development, has enforced a strict ban on the use of red meat accelerators by farmers. The FDA has mandated that all food products must be devoid of beta-agonist contamination. To ensure compliance, rigorous inspections are conducted throughout the production and distribution process, thereby reinforcing consumer confidence.
Veterinarian Chaiwat has urged collaboration across all sectors to uphold the quality and safety standards of Thai agricultural and food products. He emphasized that controlling red meat accelerators is a critical policy to instill confidence and boost the competitiveness of Thai products worldwide. The FDA’s in
itiatives are focused on safeguarding public health and fostering sustainable trust among both domestic consumers and international trading partners.
