Thai Delegation Sets Agenda for Critical COP29 Climate Negotiations.

Baku: The Thai delegation, led by Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, is gearing up for the high-stakes negotiations at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Scheduled for November 19-20, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan, the delegation is focusing on 10 key issues to be addressed during the high-level segment of the conference.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pirun Sayasitphanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment and Deputy Head of the Thai Delegation, has been instrumental in preparing these negotiation topics. The agenda includes setting new financial goals with a clear annual commitment and transparency for developing countries, and reviewing global operations to prepare for the Global Stocktake and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) for 2035.

The delegation’s priorities also encompass establishing adaptation indicators, accelerating the Loss and Damage Fund mechan
isms, and facilitating carbon credit cooperation under the Paris Agreement. Additionally, they aim to create online platforms for academic and financial support in agriculture and strengthen networks for greenhouse gas reduction targets through the Action for Climate Empowerment initiative.

Further objectives include defining the biennial greenhouse gas emission reduction progress report requirements for developing countries by the end of 2024, boosting greenhouse gas reduction potential through technology transfer and financial support from developed nations, and devising mechanisms for a just transition considering the impacts of climate change measures.

The Thai team is committed to closely monitoring these issues, particularly those with significant implications for Thailand, to inform policy-making and operational strategies in their climate change endeavors.
