Thai Government Reaffirms Commitment to ‘Gentleman Military Action’ Amid Ongoing Tensions with Cambodia

Bangkok: The Thai government has reiterated its commitment to its ‘Gentleman Military Action’ policy, emphasizing a firm stance against the cessation of operations aimed at preserving the country’s sovereignty. This development comes after Cambodian leader Hun Manet issued a sarcastic statement toward Thailand, expressing a willingness to halt operations but expressing concern over Thailand’s potential change of heart. Reports indicate that Cambodian forces have continued targeting Thai civilian areas in Surin and other regions.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap from the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration Center (TCAS) addressed the situation, particularly in response to a social media post by Hun Manet. The post declared Cambodia’s openness to a ceasefire agreement, expressing optimism about Thailand’s concurrence and delegating the negotiation process to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Jirayu highlighted that Hun Manet’s statements lacked sincerity and carried ulterior motives, often mocking Thailand despite the Thai government’s consistent calls for an end to Cambodian attacks on Thai civilian areas. He criticized the Cambodian government for its dual approach of publicly seeking attention while continuing military aggression, urging for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

The tensions escalated at 06:01 this morning when the Cambodian military allegedly committed acts described as war crimes by firing artillery into Thai territories, resulting in injuries to civilians in Ban Ta So Neung, Tambon Ban Phluang, Amphoe Prasat, Surin Province. The attack led to several houses catching fire and multiple injuries among residents.

Mr. Chirayu reiterated the Thai government’s stance, accusing the Cambodian military of initiating and perpetuating acts of cruelty and inhumanity against civilian targets. He emphasized the existence of substantial evidence recognized globally, attributing the initiation of hostilities to Cambodian forces.

The Thai government maintains its readiness to engage in ceasefire negotiations, despite ongoing provocations from the Cambodian side. Mr. Chirayu criticized Cambodia for its duplicity, suggesting that their public statements to the international community contradict their actions on the ground. He reassured that Thailand remains open to negotiations but expressed concern over the Cambodian army’s persistent attacks on civilians over the past three days.
