Thai Government Urges International Pressure on Cambodia Over Landmine Issue

Bangkok: The government is actively addressing the pressing landmine issue and is urging the international community to exert pressure on Cambodia. The government is taking a firm stance against Cambodia’s use of explosives, which has harmed Thai soldiers, and is advocating for international intervention to address this critical situation.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office and a member of the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration (CBSA), expressed the government’s deep condolences and concern for the injuries caused by Cambodian anti-personnel mines to Thai soldiers. He stated that this incident constitutes a violation of Thai sovereignty and contravenes the Ottawa Convention, labeling it an inhumane act.

Mr. Jirayu conveyed that General Nattapol Nakphanit, Deputy Minister of Defense and Director of the CBSA, assured that the government will extend full care and compensation to all injured personnel. The government is committed to providing them with dignified treatment and welfare. He stressed that the security forces will remain vigilant and take all necessary measures to safeguard Thailand’s sovereignty and security.

The government is also calling on the international community to urge the Cambodian government to expedite the clearance of landmines. Furthermore, it is appealing to the states party to the Ottawa Convention to reassess ineffective assistance and contemplate other measures necessary to prevent further casualties from this ongoing threat.
