Thailand and Cambodia Approve Plan to Remove Heavy Weapons from Border Areas

Surin: The Commander of the 2nd Army Region and the Commander of the 4th Military Region of Cambodia have approved an operational plan aimed at enhancing border stability by removing heavy weapons and those intended for destruction from conflict areas. Discussions are underway to establish an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to oversee the implementation of this initiative, with a meeting scheduled to determine the start date of operations after October 26.

According to Thai News Agency, Major General Winthai Suwaree, Army spokesman, shared insights into the meeting between the Commander of Army Area 2 and the Commander of Military Region 4. This meeting, conducted at the Chong Chom border crossing in Kap Choeng District, Surin Province, was a follow-up to the second special meeting of the Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 20-23, 2025. During the Kuala Lumpur meeting, both nations agreed on an “Action Plan” to remove heavy weapons and weapons intended for destruction from conflict zones, creating an environment conducive to peaceful resolution.

The discussions held today were collaborative, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to the Action Plan, emphasizing the importance of achieving tangible results. The plan’s execution will involve the AOT, which is expected to play a pivotal role in overseeing the removal of such weapons from the border areas.

Thailand has expressed its readiness to allow the AOT to begin its duties from October 26, 2025. Meanwhile, Cambodia is in the process of preparing its observer team, anticipating its establishment by the same date. Following this, Thailand will be invited to a subsequent meeting within the next few days to finalize the implementation date of the Action Plan.

Both countries have agreed that their working groups should collaborate closely to ensure adherence to the agreements and maintain a cooperative atmosphere. Major General Winthai also highlighted the Army’s commitment to resolving border conflicts peacefully, respecting sovereignty and international relations to ensure lasting stability and peace along the border.
