Putrajaya: Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire set to take effect at midnight tonight, marking a significant development in easing tensions along their shared border. This agreement comes after discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the two nations, with both sides committing to returning to bilateral mechanisms for conflict resolution.
According to Thai News Agency, a joint statement issued by the governments of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand followed a special meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The meeting was chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Maha Boworathibodi Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, in attendance. The United States co-hosted the meeting, while China actively participated to promote a peaceful resolution.
Prime Minister Hun Manet and Deputy Prime Minister Wechayachai have shown determination to promptly implement the ceasefire and restore normalcy. US President Donald J. Trump has also reached out to the leaders of both countries, advocating for a peaceful solution. China has maintained close contact with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and other relevant countries to encourage dialogue and peace restoration.
Both Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire effective from midnight on July 28, 2025. This agreement is seen as a crucial step in reducing tensions and restoring peace and stability. An informal meeting between regional military commanders from both countries is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. on July 29, 2025, with potential follow-up meetings involving the Deputy Defence Attache under ASEAN leadership if both parties consent.
The General Border Committee (GBC) is set to meet on August 4, 2025, with Cambodia hosting the session. Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, has expressed readiness to coordinate an observer team to ensure compliance with the agreement, in consultation with other ASEAN Member States.
Both nations have also agreed to re-establish direct communication channels between their Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and Defense Ministers. The Foreign and Defence Ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been tasked with developing a detailed mechanism to implement, monitor, and report on the ceasefire, forming a foundation for sustainable peace and shared responsibility.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold international law, peaceful coexistence, and multilateral cooperation to seek a lasting solution to the conflict. Acting Prime Minister Wechayachai stated that the discussions were fruitful, with both sides agreeing to the ceasefire and a return to bilateral conflict resolution mechanisms. This represents an important step in reducing violence and restoring peace and stability in the region.
