Bangkok: The Thai government has reiterated its stance that a ceasefire with Cambodia will only be considered if Cambodia demonstrates sincerity and engages in meaningful negotiations. This statement comes amid heightened tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border, with accusations from Thailand that Cambodia is utilizing nationalism as a rallying cry and deploying heavy weaponry in civilian areas.
According to Thai News Agency, the Center for the Administration of the Situation on the Thai-Cambodian Border (CCAB) has criticized Cambodia for avoiding negotiations while escalating military activities near the Preah Vihear Temple. Cambodia has been accused of firing rockets into Thai territory, targeting civilian areas, and using civilians as human shields-actions Thailand deems inhumane and in violation of the Geneva Conventions.
Rear Admiral Surasan Kongsiri, CCAB spokesperson, emphasized that Cambodia’s actions, such as deploying troops and laying anti-personnel mines, contravene international agreements like the Ottawa Convention. He highlighted Cambodia’s use of social media to incite nationalist fervor and distort facts, further exacerbating tensions between the two nations.
Reports indicate that Cambodia continues to employ heavy artillery against Thai targets, resulting in civilian casualties and significant injuries. Despite the challenging circumstances, Thailand’s local agencies have been commended for their swift evacuation efforts, minimizing further harm to civilians.
Ms. Maratee Nalita Andamo, Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported on discussions held at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), where Thailand presented evidence of Cambodia’s aggression. The UNSC discussions called for both nations to reduce tensions through diplomacy, with ASEAN encouraged to mediate in accordance with its Charter.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to engage with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to address Cambodia’s violations of international law, particularly concerning attacks on medical facilities. Thailand seeks the condemnation of Cambodia’s actions by the international community and stresses the need for Cambodia to show genuine commitment to peace.
The Thai government urges its citizens to refrain from retaliatory violence against Cambodians residing in Thailand, emphasizing that the conflict stems from governmental policies rather than the people themselves.
