Thailand Denies Use of MK-84 Bombs and Claims Sole Focus on Military Targets

Bangkok: Thailand has reiterated its stance that it has never possessed MK-84 bombs and asserts that its military operations are directed solely at military targets. Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office and a member of the Special Operations Center for the Administration of the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation (SOC), responded to the Cambodian government’s decision to invite foreign military attaches to survey the damage in Oddar Meanchey Province, which Cambodia claims was caused by Thai forces.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirayu dismissed the allegations, asserting that the Thai military has confirmed the area in question is a military zone where Cambodian troops operate, situated a few kilometers from the Thai-Cambodian border. He emphasized that Thailand has only conducted operations within this defined area, contrasting with Cambodia’s actions, which he claims have targeted Thai civilian areas as far as 30 kilometers from the battle line.

In response to Cambodia’s claims of finding MK-84 bombs, the Royal Thai Air Force has labeled these assertions as “fake news,” maintaining that Thailand has never procured such bombs. All Thai military acquisitions are made through certified security partners, a process that Mr. Jirayu suggested be verified by a neutral international body to ensure transparency.

The spokesperson further stressed that Thailand’s air operations are conducted as an exercise of its right to self-defense under the United Nations Charter, adhering strictly to international humanitarian law. Thailand’s operations are confined to military targets within the operational area, unlike Cambodia’s alleged attacks on Thai civilian zones.

Mr. Jirayu concluded by reaffirming the Thai government’s commitment to international principles, emphasizing its dedication to protecting civilians and upholding national sovereignty.
