Chanthaburi: Prime Minister’s Office spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat clarified the results of the meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) held on October 21-22, 2025, in Chanthaburi Province. There was no agreement on the map scale or consent to mark the border. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s post stated that “Thai and Cambodian parties agreed to proceed according to technical principles for surveying and marking the temporary boundary using a 1:200,000 scale map and the 1907 Franco-Siamese Treaty.” This is not true.
According to Thai News Agency, Siripong confirmed that the results of the JBC meeting did not address map scales or border demarcations, emphasizing that Thailand adheres to the four principles of protecting national sovereignty and interests. A government spokesperson confirmed that the statement was untrue and likely to cause misunderstanding among the public both domestically and internationally.
At the JBC meeting, there was no discussion or agreement regarding the use of a 1:200,000 scale map or the determination of temporary boundary markers in the disputed area. Both sides agreed at the meeting to assign the Joint Technical Subcommittee (JTSC) to construct new boundary markers to replace 15 damaged or lost ones, based on the same positions mutually agreed upon by both parties. They also agreed to construct new boundary markers to replace the three submerged markers, with their positions to be jointly determined at a later date.
It was also agreed to expedite the amendment of TOR 2003 to produce an orthophoto map using new technologies such as LiDAR to increase the accuracy of surveying. For the 42-47 boundary markers in the Ban Nong Chan-Ban Nong Ya Kaew area, both sides agreed to the urgent survey and temporary marker development process, based on the existing joint boundary marker survey, to serve as a basis for further discussions.
“Thailand does not tolerate any distortion of facts. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has clearly reiterated the four principles, which prioritize protecting state sovereignty, ensuring border stability, and ensuring the safety of local people. Thailand is committed to a peaceful approach, but will not tolerate and hopes that distorted information will not be created that would disrupt the atmosphere of cooperation and building trust as the Thai government seeks a peaceful solution. We urge the Thai people not to be misled by the Cambodian side’s frequent distortions, which are actions aimed at domestic political gain,” said Siripong.
