Thaksin Adjusts Well to Second Night in Klong Prem Prison

Bangkok: Thaksin Shinawatra spent his second night at Klong Prem Central Prison, adjusting well as he continues to serve his one-year sentence. The former Prime Minister was reported to be sleeping soundly and eating a full meal, following his transfer from the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions to the Bangkok Remand Prison, and subsequently to Klong Prem Central Prison.

According to Thai News Agency, Thaksin, currently undergoing a five-day COVID-19 quarantine, is adapting well to prison life. At 76 years old, he is showing no signs of restlessness or stress and is cooperating with the Department of Corrections’ guidelines. The transfer to Klong Prem was part of the protocol for convicted prisoners to ensure proper segregation, where he will remain under quarantine for the initial days.

The Supreme Court sentenced Thaksin to a one-year term, with potential for sentence suspension based on his conduct. Prisoners are classified into different categories-excellent, very good, or good-each with specific qualifications for early release. Initially classified as a middle-class prisoner, Thaksin’s conduct will determine any change in status, which would allow for a potential release around December 2025, provided he meets the necessary conditions.

There are provisions for a suspension of sentence under special circumstances, such as serious illness, disability, or age over 70, but these require serving at least one-third of the sentence and various levels of approval, including from the Minister of Justice. If granted, Thaksin would need to comply with probation conditions and report to local authorities within three days of release.

The Department of Corrections is implementing strict security measures to ensure Thaksin’s safety. Inmates with excellent behavior and specialized training are assigned to assist him. Considerations are also being made for Thaksin to contribute through public service within the prison, pending the development and approval of relevant projects.
