Thaksin’s Lawyer Highlights Completeness of Wissanu’s Court Testimony

Bangkok: Thaksin Shinawatra’s lawyer, Mr. Winyat Chatmontri, stated that the testimony given by Mr. Wissanu Krea-ngam in court has increased the completeness of many aspects of the case. He emphasized that the court’s final decision is awaited, and he refrained from commenting on the possible outcome.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Winyat highlighted that today’s hearing was more comprehensive compared to the initial hearing that involved government agencies and the Medical Council. The Medical Council representatives had limitations as they were not directly treating Mr. Thaksin. Their discretion was based on medical regulations. The court’s involvement of Mr. Wissanu provided clarity on preparations for Mr. Thaksin’s return from overseas since he is a prominent figure who once served as the Prime Minister.

Mr. Winyat also mentioned that Mr. Wissanu confirmed there were no plans to transfer Mr. Thaksin to an outside hospital for treatment, despite the sudden nature of his transfer. Mr. Thaksin’s preference to receive treatment at a private hospital was noted, although it was not possible.

When asked about the number of witnesses for the defendants, Mr. Winyat stated that the legal team prepared several witnesses but narrowed them down to three. Two of these witnesses, the former and current Chief Physicians of the Police General Hospital, have already been summoned by the court. Mr. Wissanu was the only remaining witness to testify at today’s hearing.

Mr. Winyat refrained from commenting on whether Mr. Wissanu’s testimony would improve the case’s outcome, respecting the court’s discretion. He also noted that the summons for the Bangkok Special Prison commander to hear the order on September 9th was not significant, as it pertained to the sentencing investigation process involving the Department of Corrections.

Discussing future events in the case, Mr. Winyat remarked that this type of investigation into a punishment enforcement case is unprecedented, making it a matter of public interest. He and his legal team have submitted all necessary evidence to the court.

Chanchai Issarasenarak, a former Democrat Party MP, stated that today marked the final hearing for the defendant’s witnesses. The court focused on legal matters, including the Department of Corrections’ compliance with regulations. Mr. Wissanu testified on discussions regarding Mr. Thaksin’s return to Thailand and how he would be cared for if he became ill. The court allowed all parties to present facts, setting a historical precedent. A hearing is scheduled for September 9th.

Dr. Warong Dechgitvigrom highlighted the significance of the Medical Council’s testimony, noting its neutrality. He criticized other doctors for being intrusive and unscientific. Dr. Tul Sitthisomwong revealed that plans for Mr. Thaksin’s return were prepared in advance, with Mr. Wissanu being aware of them.
