Thaksin’s Speech Unlikely to Impact Thai Politics or Economy, Says PM.

Bangkok: Prime Minister Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra has downplayed concerns regarding former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s recent public appearance and speech, stating that it will not significantly impact Thai politics, the economy, or international relations. Thaksin’s comments about a 10,000 baht giveaway, described by him as a second-phase initiative, were labeled as light-hearted by the Prime Minister, who emphasized that the speech was not intended to stir political unrest. She highlighted the importance of the Economic Policy Committee’s decisions on governmental matters and noted the positive attention Thailand is receiving from investors at the APEC stage.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paetongtarn addressed questions about potential political repercussions following Thaksin’s speech. She suggested that his words were meant to simplify political discussions and engage the public rather than cause disruption. The Prime Minister stressed the significance of clear communication during campaign
periods to elucidate party policies and objectives.

The Prime Minister further dispelled concerns about any economic or diplomatic fallout from Thaksin’s actions, asserting that his activities should not interfere with Thailand’s economic growth or foreign relations. Recently, she engaged in discussions with various international leaders during the APEC meeting, reporting promising signs of interest in investment opportunities within Thailand. She mentioned talks with CEOs from different countries, including discussions on artificial intelligence and potential investments from Taiwan, which she believes demonstrate increased confidence in Thailand’s economic prospects.

Regarding the specifics of Thaksin’s proposal for a 10,000 baht digital payment, Ms. Paetongtarn advised patience until the Economic Policy Committee convenes to finalize details on economic stimulus measures. She emphasized that any policy or financial distribution, whether in cash or digital form, must receive official approval from the com
mittee before implementation.
