TOD to serve as connecting hub for transportation modes: Minister

Development of the city based on the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD) is the key to building connectivity between transportation modes, according to Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi.

TOD is an integrated urban development planning concept by combining transportation systems, residences, commercial areas, open spaces, and public spaces.

“The concept of transportation is connectivity between several modes, such as trains, commuter trains, buses, and even smaller vehicles, including motorbikes. This can be implemented with the TOD points,” he stated at the inauguration of the Jabodetabek Transportation Integration at Tebet Station on Wednesday.

Sumadi later noted that several residents had lauded the transformation of Tebet Station into an integrated station, with other modes of transportation.

“The residents’ recognition and appreciation offer support to us to develop many TOD points in future, as Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan had conveyed as well,” Sumadi noted.

The minister highlighted the need for realizing means of mass transportation — MRT, LRT, commuter, and TransJakarta — in future.

Since the Jabodetabek area is a very large agglomeration, it is impossible for the government to solely develop Jakarta while overlooking its other surrounding areas, such as Bogor, Tangerang, Depok, and Bekasi.

In the near future, Indonesia’s state-owned railway company (PT KAI) has prepared Manggarai Station to function as a central station. With Manggarai Station being connected to Tebet Station, it will be easier for Jakarta’s residents to travel to Central Java and East Java.

“What we state here is not only a concept, but it is also real work where we execute our concept. It is a periodic work with several stakeholders, including using existing systems and facilities,” Minister Sumadi added.
